FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DAVID CARDEY TAKES USAC/CRA POINT LEAD AND TWO NEW SPONSORS TO CALISTOGA!
(SEPTEMBER 3, 2009, RIVERSIDE, CA) When the popular USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series converges on the famed Calistoga Fairgrounds Speedway for this Saturday and Sunday’s Lou Vermeil Classic, Riverside, California’s “Dynamite” David Cardey will be bringing the point lead in the championship standings and two brand new sponsors to the battle.
Cardey, a 33-year old father of one, lost the point lead on July 4th at Southern California’s Perris Auto Speedway. However, on a night that thrilled a huge throng in the Perris grandstands one month later, Cardey had to restart at the back of the pack after spinning early in the 30-lap main event. What transpired from that point on amazed all as he drove his ITI powered Viper 5 Bar Chassis from the back to a third place finish. He PASSED 19 cars in 23 laps and was challenging for second at the checkered flag. The awe-inspiring drive catapulted Cardey back into point lead. When the first green flag of the weekend flies to honor Vermeil this Saturday, Cardey will have a 22-point advantage over his closest pursuer.
This weekend’s holiday racing foray will mark Cardey’s second ever appearance at the legendary Northern California racetrack. His first was at last year’s Vermeil Classic. Things started off rosy enough on the first day when Cardey qualified sixth fastest in the 33 car field. However, things unraveled from that poi nt on and he finished 23rd and 15th in the weekend’s two main events. Don’t expect that to happen again.
As mentioned in the first paragraph, Cardey is welcoming two brand new sponsors this weekend. DWT Wheels and Defender Products are now a part of his 2009 racing effort. They join ITI Performance Motorsports, Empire Plumbing, Circle Track Racing, Racer’s Pub, Powell Pipe & Supply, Hoosier Tires, K&N Filters, 5-Star Gas & Gear and Scott Daloisio Sports in Cardey’s fight for the 2009 USAC/CRA crown. To add your company to the sponsor list of David Cardey Racing’s winning team, please use the contact information at the start or end of this release.
After this weekend’s doubleheader in the Wine Country, Cardey and the famous red #38 will take next weekend off before returning to Pe rris Auto Speedway on September 19th for the Jack Kindoll Classic.

Sprint Car Championship Battle Is Focus of Louie Vermeil Classic
Kevin Swindell to Defend Last Year’s Victory;
Midget Co-Feature is “Battle of the Champions”
Calistoga……..Tennessee dri ver Kevin Swindell will be hoping to play the spoiler over Labor Day weekend, looking to repeat last year’s victory in the Louie Vermeil Classic, while four Southern California drivers will be continuing their fight for the championship of the United States Auto Club/Lucas Oil CRA Sprint Cars.
The second half of the weekend’s racing doubleheader at Calistoga Speedway will feature some of the best midget drivers along the West Coast, including three former champions of the Bay Cities Racing Association and the WMRA champion from Washington state, who is undefeated in five races so far this year.
The weekend marks the only appearance this season for the traditional style, “non-wing” sprint cars and midgets at Calistoga and is one of the few races in Northern California for the USAC-sanctioned series.
Midgets and sprint ca rs will race both nights of the second annual Louie Vermeil Classic, honoring a Napa Valley pioneer who established and managed racing at Calistoga for over 50 years, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5, 6 on the Calistoga Speedway half mile oval at the Napa County Fairgrounds.
Joining the third-generation racer Swindell in the spoiler ranks is one of the most versatile and well-traveled drivers in sprint car racing, Jesse Hockett of Warsaw, Mo. Hockett, a former feature winner at Calistoga, has won some of sprint car racing’s biggest events in recent years, including 2008 Oval Nationals in southern California and Western World Championships in Arizona.
The USAC/CRA contingent is led by David Cardey, of Perris, Ca., who has a very slim lead over three other drivers in a highly competitive series that has seen 11 different winners in 13 races. Only Cardey,20who won at Petaluma and Perris earlier this year, is a repeat winner.
Garrett Hanson, Manhattan Beach, and a pair of other Southern California drivers, Blake Miller and defending champion Mike Spencer, are also in the title fight and any of the four could leave Calistoga with the points lead at the end of the weekend.
Hanson, who also has a healthy lead in the championship chase in the USAC Western States midgets, will have to contend with at least four Northern California champions, including Nick Foster (2008 BCRA), Matt Streeter (’99 BCRA) and Justin Grant (’07, BCRA). Evan Morgeson of Tacoma Washington, the 2007 Washington state midget champion, will also be at Calistoga Speedway this weekend, looking to extend his undefeated string.
All of the racers are motivated by t he USAC purse, which is doubled from last year for Sunday night’s winners ($5,000 for sprint cars, $2,500 for midgets). With contingency sponsors, it is likely that the Saturday night winning purse will match that.
more
Both the sprint cars and midgets will run a full program both nights of the Louie Vermeil Classic, including heat races and a 25 lap feature race on the half mile oval. Qualifying begins both nights at 6:30 pm, with spectator gates open at 5 pm.
The Louie Vermeil Classic is one of the biggest weekends of the Calistoga Speedway season, with events on the fairgrounds throughout both days, including a dedication to the late Calistoga resident who is widely credited with establishing racing on the fairgrounds and was instrumental in managing events there for 50 years, prior to his retirement from racing in 1985:
· Wine-tasting on Saturday afternoon will feature more than a dozen Napa Valley vintners;
· During pre-race ceremonies on Saturday, the Vermeil family and the Board of Directors of the Napa County Fairgrounds will formally unveil a new sign that will officially designate Calistoga Speedway as “the home of Louie Vermeil.”
· A silent auction of racing items, some of them donated by former Indy Car champions Mario Andretti and Johnny Rutherford.

WINNER’S PAYOFF DOUBLES FOR LOUIE VERMIEL CLASSIC AT CALISTOGA
Hockett, Kevin Swindell, Gardner are early entries
Sacramento……..The sprint car winners for this year’s Louie Vermeil Classic at Calistoga Speedway will pocket a cool $5,000 on Sunday night of the Labor Day weekend event, double the payoff for last year’s inaugural race, the United States Auto Club announced today. Saturday will pay USAC’s regular purse at $300 to start, $2500 to win.
Winners of the companion 30 lap midget features on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6, will earn $2,500, a significant increase over last year, according to Tommy Hunt, USAC Western States vice-president.
The increased purse has already drawn entries from some of the country’s top open wheel drivers, who will go up against top teams in the Southern California-based USAC/CRA sprint car series, which has at least four drivers in close combat for the championship honors.
Among the entries is Kevin Swindell, a third generation driver from Bartlett, Tenn., who will be looking to repeat last year’s victory on the Calistoga Speedway half-mile, where he lapped cars deep into the field during the 30 lap event.
Other confirmed entries include one of the top-ranking drivers in the American Sprint Car Series, Jesse Hockett, of Warsaw, Mo., who is fresh off his dramatic win at the Ultimate Challenge and a former winner at the Napa County Fairgrounds track.
Damion “The Demon” Gardner, a Northern California native and former winner at Calistoga in the Golden State Challenge Series is also entered. The former winner of one of the country’s most prestigious mid-winter midget races, the Chili Bowl, was a resident of the San Francisco Bay area before relocating to Indianapolis to race full time with the USAC National Sprint Car Series.
The Louie Vermeil Classic was created last year to honor the late Calistoga resident who was instrumental in bringing racing to the speedway in 1937 and managing racing there until his retirement from the sport in 1985. Vermeil, a staunch advocate of traditional “non-wing” racing, was also a founder of the Northern Auto Racing Club, the forerunner of today’s Golden State Challenge Series, and served as the club’s president for 20 years.
